Creating Small Mason Jar Bouquets for your Next Party

The summer is such a great time to celebrate with family and friends. Those outdoor country weddings, garden parties, backyard parties, or a baby or wedding showers are usually in abundance over the summer. No matter what the event is for, it’s always such a beautiful touch when you can add some fresh flowers to the event. Even the simplest single stem in a mini vase can be super sweet. If you are on a bit of a budget but would still like a touch of fresh blooms, our Bucket of Blooms can be purchased to create small mason jar arrangements and they are super simple to create especially with these step by step instructions.

Step 1

  • Plan how many arrangements you will need.

  • For each small arrangement you will need 5-7 main blooms, 3-6 accent flowers, 3-5 leafy stems, 1 tall stem, 1 airy accent.

  • Decide on a colour scheme

  • Order the correct amount of Bucket of Blooms available during the summer (around July to September) in our online shop. Our Large Bucket contains 70-80 stems of mixed blooms. We also have a small bucket of 25-30 blooms. Be sure to order a bit more than you need so be sure you have enough. The small bucket is a great add on for this reason, In the comment field on our order let us know what you are making and how many so we can make sure you have the correct proportions. For example, “ I am making 10 small mason jar arrangements for an event with a pastel colour scheme.”

  • We often have feature flowers for sale by the bunch, if you are wanting to really make a fancy arrangement, you can add a bunch or two of our specialty flowers as well to really make an amazing piece. These specialty flowers may include such stems like gladiolus, ranunculus, sunflowers, peonies and possibly dahlias.

  • Plan to pick up or have your blooms delivered 24 to 48 hours before your event.

Step 2

  • Fill your clean mason jars with water and have a clean pair of scissors available. I like the regular pint mason jar. The wide mouth doesn’t hold the flowers as tight.

  • Line up your stems according to each type. In this example, the main blooms are Zinnias, accents include Cosmos, Feverfew and smaller Zinnias. The leafy stems are Purple Basil and Apple of Peru. The long spike stem is the Amaranthus and the airy accent is Queen Anne’s Lace

Step 3

  • Take you main larger blooms and put them in the jar. You will see there is alot of space as some stems are too long. To tighten the arrangement you will need to cut the stems shorter.

  • For this first stage, before cutting the zinnias, I find it helpful if you gather them in your left hand and slide the stem up or down with your right hand to get the flowers at the right height then cut them at the bottom all together and place back in the vase.

Step 4

Add the taller leafy stems making sure they aren’t the exact same length so you don’t get “rabbit ears’ on each side.

Step 5

Continue adding the accent flowers and and any spike stems. I like to make sure any spike stems are off to the side a bit so you don’t get a long stem sticking straight up from the bouquet. Don’t be scared to cut that stem down quite a bit so it’s not disconnected from the shape of the rest of the arrangement.

Step 6

  • Add any remaining accents and leafy stems

  • Now for the magic……Add the Queen Anne’s Lace or any other airy accent to finish it off. Marvel at how sweet it looks, then get to work making the rest of your bouquets!

Look at this sweet arrangement!

You can create multiple small bouquets like this when you order our Buckets of Blooms for your next event!

I like to add a ribbon or a bit of raffia around the vase to add a sweet touch.

Here’s some ideas on how to use our Bucket of Blooms

  • Center pieces for all the guest tables at a wedding, anniversary party or shower

  • Create multiple fresh arrangements for a group of friends, teachers, etc

  • Have a fun night in with friends and host a Build Your Own Bouquet Party. Tell everyone to bring a vase, pair of scissors build your own bouquet.
